While tactical firearm training isn’t a legal requirement for armed response or security personnel, it is highly recommended for those wishing to up-skill their firearm knowledge and experience, especially those working in Cash In Transit (CIT).
Many of the principles and techniques taught in Tactical Firearm Training are potentially life-saving. At the False Bay Firearm Training Academy in Cape Town, we offer PFTC accredited ITA Tactical Training unit standards, and a wide range of independent training programmes, too.
This post will cover several frequently asked questions about the ITA Tactical Training Course and unit standards.

WHAT PRIOR FIREARM TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS ARE REQUIRED?
You need to have completed your Basic Unit Standards, Legal studies, and Business Purpose courses.
It’s also highly advised to have sufficient shooting experience and weapons familiarity before attempting the Tactical Training Courses. Additional pre-course firearm handling / training by the Academy’s qualified instructors is available on request.
HOW MANY TACTICAL TRAINING COURSES ARE THERE?
There are currently four Firearm related PFTC accredited unit standards on offer:
- Apply tactical knowledge in the use of firearms Unit Standard 123510
- Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a handgun Unit Standard 123513
- Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a self-loading rifle or carbine Unit Standard 123518
- Demonstrate tactical proficiency with a shotgun Unit Standard 123512
DO YOU HAVE TO DO ALL FOUR UNIT STANDARDS TO QUALIFY?
No, you don’t. Because the Tactical Firearm Training courses are voluntary, you can opt to do as many courses as you like. However, for a comprehensive understanding of tactical principles, it’s recommended that all four units be completed, starting with the first unit standard: APPLY TACTICAL KNOWLEDGE IN THE USE OF FIREARMS.
Moreover, certain CIT companies may require you to complete all four units to apply for employment.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE ALL FOUR TACTICAL TRAINING COURSES?
It takes at least five working days to complete the unit standards. This includes theoretical studies, but doesn’t necessarily include the practical shooting exercises which can vary in duration.
WHAT EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED TO DO THE COURSES?
No firearms are required as these are provided by the Firearm Training Academy. However, you will need to bring you own safety equipment / tactical vests etc.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS FOR EACH UNIT STANDARD?
Please contact the Academy directly for pricing, as costs and availability are subject to change.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TACTICAL FIREARM SKILLS AND TECHNIQUES YOU WILL LEARN ON THE COURSES?
The unit standards cover a wide range of skill sets, some of which include…
- Tactical awareness and preparedness
- How to use cover and concealment effectively
- Vehicle approach and shooting angles
- Approaching stairwells
- Shooting over high walls and obstacles
- Arrest and search techniques
